The Bowler Hat, also known as the Derby or the Billycock, came to be because horse-riders needed a hat that would not get knocked off by branches while on horseback. These horse-riders needed a more functional hat than their ever popular Top hat and that was when the Bowler was designed specifically to fit close and low.
