A Brief History...

In 1974, Marsha Akins started Makins Hats in her one-room 4th floor walk-up. Using a Jiffy steamer, she molded the raw hat bodies over wood blocks that the block-maker/carpenter had carved from her designs. She baked these hats dry in her home oven. Now more than 23 years later, Makins is in their 3rd factory. They still make all their hats by hand, one at a time, using steam to mold the straw and felt bodies over the wood blocks. They take great pride in making the finest hats available. Makins hats are soft, flexible, and easy-to-wear hats that people feel good in.
